TECHNIQUE TIPS FOR USING THE HOOP-SPIKE

BEGINNERS1.

  1. Footwork for a right hander:
    Three step spike approach (L-R-L)
    Four step spike approach (R-L-R-L)

  2. Footwork for a left hander:
    Three step spike approach (R-L-R)
    Four step spike approach (L-R-L-R)

  3. The last two steps should be planted quickly in sequence and parallel to provide a quick stop and to power upward.4.

  4. For visual assistance place tape or mark in some fashion on the floor/ground to mirror the footwork used for your style of approach

  5. To work arm extension place height of the ball on the Hoop-Spike at the peak of your maximum arm extension.

  6. Arm swing is important for assisting in the jump as well as preparation for the spike.

  7. Speed of the arm swing will determine the level of power behind the ball. This can be assisted by pulling back tight at the elbow and extending the arm only after you have rotated the elbow forward when spiking.

ADVANCED1.1.

  1. It is recommended the ball height to be set to maximize full arm extension. This may seem to high initially but will help with both your jump and arm swing.

  2. Hitting repetition is your goal. To simulate game approaches place yourself in blocking positions and serve receive positions, this will simulate transition movements to your normal approach starting point.

  3. A single player may simulate a no approach swing by standing in a blocking position as if at the net. Then jump, swing, tip or direct block from a stationary position.

  4. To simulate an attack against various blocks add a 2nd player. The blocker is used to show an open cross court hit, down the line and a split in the block. This can be accomplished by moving hand positions to right, left or split.

  5. This training device can also be used to master the footwork for a swing or slide step. Simulate positions on the court to begin approach and repeat steps. If right handed you should pivot jump off your left foot and left handers should pivot jump off your right foot.
